As what I call a "shits and giggles" designer I understand where you're coming from. I had no reason to learn the things I know about Photoshop and design other than sheer boredom and curiosity. I'll happily exclaim that I am still learning and will most likely never reach a level of skill that I'm completely confident with (mostly because I'm so critical of my own work)
Too often I see people of basic level skill being praised by legions of "fans" for work that I was doing when I was first learning Photoshop. Its amazing how those people are praised for such simple things when real designers get little to no attention.
However, those people who are stuck at the basic level are not progressing in any way, and some even see themselves as "Photoshop Gods" which is amusing when you consider what would happen if they were asked why they aren't making money off their "amazing skills"
